Thank you for your question. President Bush recently signed the unemployment extension act, which increased the benefit period by 3 months for states with unusually high unemployment rates.
Prior to this act the maximum number of weeks for filing unemployment was 26 weeks. Now with this new bill you can apply and qualify for an additional 13 weeks of benefits, once your initial claim is exhausted.
You will need to apply and qualify for these extended benefits. To see if your state has extended its benefits period you can go to a local unemployment office, call your state's unemployment department, or check out our states unemployment website.
