Unemployment Help Center
Amy from San francisco asks:
What happens if I get turned down for unemployment insurance?
Statepay support representative suggests:
You can file an appeal.
Every state gives you the right to challenge a denial or disqualification of benefits. That’s essentially what an appeal is: a meeting where you get to state your case and your reasons for why the state was wrong to turn you down.
This can be due to many reasons, so it’s always a good idea to appeal, if only to get to the bottom of why you were denied. It’s possible that there has been an error on your part or on the part of the agency, it’s possible that an employer misrepresented how you lost your job, or that you had a good reason to miss a week of looking for work. Whatever the reason, exercise your right to appeal. But do so quickly, as most states only give you 14 days to file your appeal.
